Growth by care, not timers

September 29, 2026 by the RiftPets team

Most virtual pet games have a waiting problem. You tap, then you wait. You tap a button that says "speed up," and then you wait some more. Players call it a timer wall, and they do not love it.

We wanted something different for RiftPets. We wanted the time you spend with your pet to be the thing that helps it grow. This is how we are building it.

The base rule

Every stage of a pet's life has a 24 hour timer. A baby becomes a teenager on day two, and a teenager becomes an adult on day three. Hands off players still get a grown up pet about 48 hours after hatching. Close the tab, go to school or work, and your pet is still growing.

That is the floor. Nobody is left behind, and nobody has to check in on a schedule.

Care is a bonus

Here is the part we care about. If you do the care tasks, a stage that would take 24 hours can finish in about four hours, with no boost items at all.

Think of a stage as a bar from 0 to 100 percent. The timer fills it slowly and steadily, about 4 percent an hour. Care fills it in bursts. Our proposed numbers, which are still tunable while we test, look like this:

  • Play until the happiness meter reaches the top and add 10 percent. It can pay out again after a 30 minute cooldown.
  • Feed until your pet is full and add 5 percent, with a 60 minute cooldown.
  • Give a treat and add 3 percent, up to five treats a day.
  • Finish a nap and add 10 percent.
  • Keep your pet warm under the blanket for 10 minutes and add 5 percent.

An attentive first hour earns about 25 percent. Four attentive hours earn the whole stage. That is where the four hour number comes from. You do not need to hit every goal at once, and you cannot cheat the cooldowns by tapping fast.

The bar teaches the game

There is one more design choice we love. The growth bar is visible on the pet card, and it ticks up the moment a care goal is complete. So the meters are the tutorial. You play with your pet, you see the happiness meter rise, and you see the pet grow a little. There is no wall of text telling you what to do. You just try things and watch what happens.

Why nothing dies

Some early virtual pets let their pets die if you forgot them. When we looked at the research, that was a lasting complaint. People remembered the loss and felt bad about it for years. Meanwhile, timer based games earned a different complaint: they made players wait and then offered to sell them the shortcut.

RiftPets takes a different path. Nothing ever dies. Leave one alone for weeks and it wanders off. If you are away, your pet keeps growing and even keeps building friendship. What fades is comfort: hunger, warmth and fun wear down slowly. After about 48 hours alone, a pet is very cold, unhappy and hungry, and it will greet you like it missed you. The promise stands: your pet is never gone for good.

Boosts and flowers

Care is not the only way to help a pet along. In the plan, feeding a baby a growth flower turns it into a teenager in about two hours, and feeding again makes it an adult about two hours later. Eggs work on their own clock too. An incubator hatches an egg in 24 hours, and a flower in the incubator cuts that to four hours. Cheap flowers can be used, and each one doubles the speed, at most once an hour. Some boost item details are still being decided, and we will share them as they settle.

The friendship side

Growth is only half of the story. Two adult pets that play together build a friendship meter. When it reaches 75 percent, the mating pen unlocks, and a couple of hours later there is an egg. You can sell that egg or incubate it. Then it starts all over again with a new baby.

The idea behind it all

We think a pet should feel like a friend, not a subscription. The best moments in a pet game are the small ones: a happy bounce, a snack eaten, a nap taken. Making those moments the thing that speeds growth means the game rewards exactly what you would want to do anyway.
